With a 401(k) you may only distribute funds if you qualify for an IRS distributable event, or if you qualify for a loan or hardship withdrawal (applicable to both Pre-Tax 401(k) and Roth 401(k)). For most people, you may withdraw without an additional 10% tax on April 1st of the year your age reaches 59 ½.
